The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006) - New Classic Movie Review

The Departed (Martin Scorsese, 2006) - The perception of a film has a full life cycle. First, there is the theatrical premiere, and all the trappings that come with it. Critics and bloggers write all their reviews, and an initial consensus is formed as to the quality of the film. This is complicated by whether or not the film has met viewers' preconceptions, which are susceptible to all sorts of manipulation before the fact. The studios churn out publicity campaigns, selling an image crafted through trailers, commercials, TV spots, and merchandising. Further, people bring their own opinions about the director, or the actors, or the genre. Its hard to break through this and just see the film for what it is, which is why it is valuable to take another look after some time has passed, to gain some perspective separated from the first theatrical run or the subsequent awards season campaigning.

Films don't gain "classic" status until at least 10 or 15 years after their premiere, and sometimes it takes several decades to wipe off the dust and recognize quality (Touch of Evil, for one example). But does it have to take this long? After not yet 4 years, I took another look at The Departed, the film that finally won Marty his Oscar, to see if my perception had changed. The Departed was a film that I personally had difficulty separating from my own expectations. I am a self-confessed Scorsese fanatic, and on top of that I was already a fan of Infernal Affairs, the Hong Kong film upon which The Departed is based. So I was anticipating the premiere for quite awhile. I've had time to let it breathe, let its subtext seep into my subconscious, free from the perceptual cloud that is a publicity campaign, and free also from my own gleefully heightened expectations.

My initial reaction was that there were competing impulses in the film and that the whole thing doesn't quite fit together as a piece. I still feel that way, only now I have changed my thinking on which scenes and actors are the strongest and which let the film down. At first I enjoyed Matt Damon's sly, dark-comic turn as the impotent, family-less, cold-and-calculating goody-two-shoes. I also thought Mark Wahlberg and Alec Baldwin were highlights. I liked DiCaprio but I didn't understand what all the fuss was about; after all, I thought he was better in The Aviator. And Jack Nicholson turned me off entirely. In the run-up to the premiere, I read how Scorsese scheduled added shooting days to work with Jack as the insanity of his performance evolved, and after seeing the end result I felt he was too bizarre and self-consciously over-the-top in a way that distracted from the exciting thriller that was taking place.

This time around, instead of Jack and his mania being a problem, I felt this is where the film should have spent more time. Ray Winstone works scarily well off of Jack to infuse their scenes of sick violence and intimidation with a desperate and existentially lost quality. Yes, Wahlberg and Baldwin have a lot of fun with their scenes, but it is DiCaprio's experience deep undercover that really resonates. The problem is that Matt Damon is working on an entirely different plane. He plays his role as if he's the only one who's seen Infernal Affairs and is trying to make a genuine remake. (It's been reported neither Scorsese nor screenwriter William Monahan ever saw the original film). He's cerebral and ruthless to be sure, but not sick. Not twisted. Not unhinged.

What I didn't get the first time around was that, at its heart, The Departed is NOT a thriller. This is not Infernal Affairs: The Remake. The heart of the movie is the sentiment that something is just not right in the world, expressed by DiCaprio's character in the back of a police vehicle, spoken to his boss, played by Martin Sheen. Upon recent viewing, DiCaprio indeed does stand out, and delivers a committed and troubling performance. His scenes with Vera Farmiga are mature and sexy, and the reason her character is attracted to his vulnerability is plainly evident, as he wears the scars of his experiences all over his face. The film should be judged on whether Scorsese succeeds in combining the turn-the-plot, thriller aspects of the film's conception with the dark, character-based themes that Jack, Leo, and Winstone are developing. I'm still not entirely convinced that he does. That being said, I recognize that, with films like Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and Goodfellas to compare it to, The Departed may never escape the unreasonable expectations Scorsese has set up for himself, no matter how many years have passed.

An Overview Of Video Editing Software

This article sets out the basic differences between three popular video editing suites for the amateur video user. The article does not try to answer the question about which one of the three is best or why, because they are very different products and all are suitable in their own right. The amateur video user is probably using a digital video (DV) camera to capture images of family festivities, celebrations and special events and needs the video editing software in order to edit and collate clips into a continuous and enjoyable 'story'.

So, ease of use is an important consideration along with the editing tools, transitions between clips and the final production of a video that may be easily copied to DVD or uploaded to YouTube or other social media sites.

1) Windows Live Movie Maker (free)

Windows Movie Maker comes free with the Windows operating system. It works with every release of Windows from Windows 95 onwards - download it from the Microsoft website. Windows Movie Maker 2.1 is for XP operating systems and Windows Live Movie Maker 2011 is for Vista and 7 operating systems.

Both versions are very similar. They are easy to use to import video clips from your camera, edit them by clipping and cutting and place them on a 'timeline' for your story board. You may then add special effects such as pixelate, turn the clip into black and white, or produce a very grainy and jumpy 'old film' effect.

Watching a string of, often unrelated, clips can be quite disconcerting as the movie 'jump' cuts from one scene to the next, so adding some cool transitional effects makes the movie look more professional. Fading in from black or white, dissolves, chequer-boarding and filling in from the right/left or above/below are all available.

The soundtrack to the movie can be adjusted to be at the same level from clip to clip and a narration to the movie can be added through a microphone to the computer. This is a much clearer and more controllable method than using the microphone on the DV Camera.

2) MoviePlus (about £60 incl. VAT)

Available from many outlets, including the high street and online, MoviePlus is from the Serif stable of software. The movie is produced by adding video clips and still images to a storyboard and manipulating them in the same way as Movie Maker. However, there is far more control over the workspace. You may adjust the strength, style and rate of change of special effects; how they affect your video clips; you may consider the speed, direction and colour; plus almost everything else from myriad transitional elements, dissolves and freezes.

MoviePlus has the ability to play a picture within a picture for an unusual special effect. Backgrounds can be animated, re-coloured or removed altogether. Blue screening is the professional way of changing the background from the original image. Handy assistants help you to import, export and organise your images and video clips.
With unlimited tracks on the timeline and a greater control over the soundtrack, really stunning movies can be produced quickly and easily. You may then burn them onto DVDs with the built in menu designer, or upload directly to YouTube or other social media sites.

3) Adobe Premiere Elements 9 (about £100 incl. VAT)

Available from Adobe directly or from resellers such as Amazon and Play.com, Adobe Premier Elements is the baby brother of Adobe Premiere Pro which is chosen by professional video editors (including Hollywood!) and costs nearly 10 times the price of Elements.

Premiere Elements 9 will happily import video clips and images in almost every format possible including ASF, AVI, AVCHD, SWF, DV, DVD, H.264, HDV, MOD and TOD (JVC Everio, import only), MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, MP3, WAV, QuickTime, Windows Media, and WMA. Adobe Elements Organiser is used to organise all your video clips, still images and audio files and other resources.

In common with the two previously described software suites, the resources that go to make the video are imported onto the 'timeline' where they may be edited and manipulated to a high degree. Handy pop-ups help you carry out quite complex tasks without any prior knowledge.

There is a suite of six audio effects for cleaning up the soundtrack. This is very useful for removing background noises such as hiss, traffic rumble, aircraft or wind buffeting the DV camera's microphone.

For a user starting out on video editing Windows Movie Maker is a very good place to start and perhaps move up to either of the paid programs as confidence and ability grow.

How to Attend a Movie Premiere

Ever wanted to rub shoulders with celebrities such as Britney Spears, Paris Hilton or Lindsay Lohan? Did you know that tickets for most movie premieres are often free and available to the general public? Many people have heard about movie screenings or see celebrity snapshots from the red carpet in fashion magazines. However, the quest to attend one of these events often remains a mystery. Here are six VIP tips to ensure you find tickets and seats inside world premieres and advance movie screenings.

1- Know where to look.

Movie screening locations will be advertised in the entertainment section of local newspapers or online. Newspaper ads will require you to RSVP to an email or pick up the tickets from a physical location. Online movie screening recruitment companies such as Movie Filler provide information, news and a movie screening locator about free movie tickets to screenings and movie premieres.

2- Check back frequently.

If you thought discount airline tickets were tough to get your hands on, wait until trying to get movie screening tickets. Although tickets are generally free, they have a tendency to sell out quickly. Checking websites that distribute screening tickets on a regular basis provides a higher chance of reserving a ticket. In addition, make sure to sign up for any electronic newsletters to keep informed as new screenings are posted.

3- Update personal information.

Make sure any personal information you provide is updated and correct. Tickets are often distributed based on specific demographic. Having your information correct will increase your chances for getting invited to world premiers and movie screenings you would actually want to attend.

4- Plan to arrive early.

Movie premieres and screenings are often overbooked to ensure that the theater is full. Those that arrive early will have the best chance to get available seating inside the theater. A general rule of thumb is to arrive around 60 minutes before a movie screening and at least 120 minutes before a movie premiere.

5- Leave camera phones in the car.

When it comes to piracy, studios take no chances. Recording devices will not be allowed into movie screenings. There will usually be several security officers performing a search as you enter the event. If you have a camera phone, they will ask you to return it to your car. Avoid losing your place in line and make sure to leave it in your vehicle.

6- Prepare your review.

Audience interviews won't happen at every screening. However, if you see a film crew, be assertive and volunteer to be interviewed. Remember to be as descriptive as possible when describing your thoughts about the movie and steer away from one-word answers. After the shoot, monitor online video sites like YouTube and MySpace Videos, then brag to your friends.
